Reviews for The Northern Voyage

“Seeing the BC coast through Maya’s eyes is a true joy—she evokes the spirit of the place in a magical way, and flicking through these pages I found my spine tingling with the memories of places visited and with the anticipation of adventures yet to come. She has a gift for light and imagery that is only complemented by her beautiful writing, and will whisk you away on an enchanting and meandering voyage to a coast that time seems to have left behind.” —Leo Goolden. Sampson Boat Co.

“In the world of stories about sailing and boatbuilding, few people captivate the imagination quite like Maya Rovegno. Her unmatched ability to weave words, images, and sound into living, breathing narratives does more than document a voyage—it submerges the viewer, and now the reader, fully within it.” —Allison McIsaac & James Stace. Allison & James Sailing.

“This book dissolves the boundary between living, making, and moving through the world. Maya treats adventure as a creative act, and creativity as a way of paying attention. Her words and images hold space for uncertainty, for slow travel, for the long work that precedes arrival. What emerges is a practice of being in relationship with place, with process, with time itself. A marvellous book, and highly recommended.” —Angie Richard. Floating Stories Lab, Women & the Wind.

About The Northern Voyage

In the spring of 2025, Maya and Aladino Rovegno launched Magic Carpet II, the vintage sailboat they had spent five years rebuilding. Tired and disillusioned by the unexpectedly long refit, they sailed north in search of a new direction in life. What followed was a transformative journey through geography and self, past glacier-capped mountains, remote coastal communities, and lonely islands where bears roamed the beaches and sea otters spun through the surf.

From Vancouver, they followed the Inside Passage north to British Columbia's central coast, before turning south to the rugged western shores of Vancouver Island. Part travel narrative, part photobook, The Northern Voyage invites readers aboard a restored sailboat for a journey along one of the world’s wildest coastlines.

This book is designed to be read however the reader chooses. It is possible to read from cover to cover, and if approached this way, the book will take you on a journey along the entire Northern Voyage. However, the book can also be enjoyed simply for its photography, or it can be read out of sequence. Each chapter is quite short, allowing the photography to tell a story alongside the words.

A note from Maya: Given the varied history of our YouTube channel, I should also briefly mention what this book is not. It is not a manual on sailing, nor a technical manual on refits. It is not a guidebook to the BC coast either. Think of it to sailing like what one of those beautiful architectural magazines are to home building—they don't tell you how to build a house, but they get you very excited to try. If this book succeeds in piquing your interest in sailing the BC Coast, there is a 'further reading' section at the end which will tell you about the guidebooks that we used to make this voyage possible.
